WHAT AM I LIKELY TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE? You’ll enjoy the tracks and trails in Jarrah forests or Wandoo woodlands while looking for birds, birds and more birds. The best way to explore and immerse onself in nature is on foot, and a closer look at the different habitats and layers of the forest reveals an astonishing variety of not only birds, but also trees and plants – orchids, hakea, grevillea, banksias, eucalypts and cycads – with something in bloom all through the year. I love explaining their traditional cultural and medicinal uses and created a unique experience that involves all your senses! Certain mammals can be harder to spot on foot, but Western grey kangaroos, echidnas and bandicoots are regularly encountered.
HOW DIFFICULT ARE THE WALKS? I specialise in walking with small groups only, so expect to be fully immersed in nature and learn all about it. The Perth Hills has countless easy to moderate walking trails, varying from anywhere between 3-5 to 10+ kilometres on pretty flat and established, well-trodden single track paths. Although some trails involve a moderate climb, no bouldering or strenuous scrambling is required. A moderate fitness level is enough to participate, but in case you have any concern please feel free to get in touch with me.
WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORT? The distance from Perth CBD to the Perth Hills is approximately 40 kilometres, and will take about 45 minutes only. My tours start from Glen Forrest near Mundaring, but a CBD pick up can be arranged at an additional fee.
WHAT DO I WEAR? Comfortable clothes in light natural colours are recommended for bird and wildlife spotting and to stay cool during warm days. Parts of the trails are on laterite rock and so-called ‘pea-gravel’, so closed hiking boots or trail shoes are suggested.
DO I GET A REFUND IF THE TOUR IS CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER? Yes you do.
ARE THE TOURS SUITABLE FOR DISABLED PERSONS? Regarding the amount of walking involved and the nature of the terrain, my excursions are most likely not the best option for people who make use of a wheelchair or other walking aids. However, please get in touch with me in case you have special needs so we can discuss alternative options.
WHY SHOULD I USE A GUIDE? – A guide will choose the places where you are most likely to find the birds you would like to see: local knowledge is priceless; – A guide can interpret what you find and see, whether it’s a bird, its call, or anything else that is of interest such as mammals, reptiles, insects, plants and trees; – A guide is trained and equipped to deal with problems or emergencies; – A guide can provide all logistics, food and of course coffee; – In short, a guide provides everything needed to make your birding trip hasslefree, rewarding and memorable
