Tour Summary
The Jarrah forests of the Darling Scarp are a comfortable one-hour drive from Perth CBD, offering a lush and serene escape from the bustling city life. These forests are found nowhere else on earth and form a unique habitat for an abundance of birds and wildlife to flourish in. Join me on a few different walks through this captivating place, where we will look for an array of birds such as Western Whistler (Pachycephala occidentalis, endemic), Western Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus superciliosus, endemic), Twenty-eight (ssp. emitorquatus) and Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius, endemic), Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii ssp. naso), New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), Scarlet Robin (Petroica boodang), Red-Winged Fairywren (Malurus elegans, endemic) and many more species, amonst which a few more southwest endemics, near-endemics and unique subspecies.
With a chance to spot no less than 11 of Western Australia’s 16 endemic bird species, the Birds of the Forest Tour makes for an exciting day of birding and wildlife photography, close to the city and therefore ideal for travellers on a tight schedule. This adventure is not only an excellent introduction to the diverse birds of South-West Australia, but also a wonderful opportunity to connect with the natural world and experience the breathtaking beauty of these unique forests.
The sites visited on the day will be tailored to the best local birding conditions and species of interest.
You can choose to combine the Birds of the Forest tour with a visit to Herdsman Lake in Perth. This wetland is home to various waterbirds such as the Australian Shelduck, Pink Eared Duck, Musk Duck, Australasian Swamphen, and Australian Pelican. First-time visitors to Australia can see many new species here!
